Did you know?
The 9 days Day Skipper is a continuous course, combining theory and practical modules on a daily basis. The course contents, the standards for training, and the procedures for assessment during the course are identical with those of the 5 day Day Skipper Theory and 5 day Day Skippers Practical course.
Who is it for?
Theory:The course is for those new to navigation and seamanship or wanting to consolidate existing skills. The students will acquire essential background knowledge needed to navigate a yacht on simple passages – during day light hours only.
Practical:The course is for those who aim to improve their sail setting and deck work. You will also develop your knowledge and understanding of seamanship and safety issues. During the course you will be able to take charge of the yacht on short tidal passages, under the guidance of the instructor.
Ability after course
Skipper a small yacht safely in daylight hours in tidal waters familiar to the student.
Syllabus
The scope of the course includes basic pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.
This course introduces the students to the following fundamental topics necessary to be able to skipper a yacht:
- Preparation for sea
- Deck work
- Navigation
- Pilotage
- Meteorology
- Rules of the road
- Maintenance and repair work
- Engines
- Victualling
- Emergency situations
- Yacht handling under power
- Yacht handling under sail
- Passage making
- Night cruising
Note: If you want to apply for your SAS Day Skippers Ticket, you will need to have the following:
- ICASA VHF Radio License
- Eye test

Optional beneficial modules (bookings made upon request by student)
- RYA Power Boat Level II - 2 days
- Successful candidates will receive a license to drive a yacht tender under 10 metres.
- Our training includes some free fun: skiing, wakeboarding and tubing!
- RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance - 1 day
- RYA Radar - 1 day
- RYA VHF – 1 day
- Stewardess Training - 5 days

Qualifications obtained (for essential modules)
- RYA Day Skipper for Sail and Power Craft Shorebased Course Certificate
- RYA Day Skipper Tidal Practical Sailing Course Certificate
Where to from here?
Once qualified as a RYA Day Skipper you can add on to this by simply doing your RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate.

Accommodation
Free accommodation is on board your training yacht for the duration of the course (including sheets, pillows, pillow cases, fully equipped galley and cleaning products). The yacht is serviced once a week. WIFI vouchers can be purchased from our office.
Food
Nutritional light lunches are provided during the 4 -day theory modules.
Tea and coffee are available at the office ~ always welcome for a cuppa!
Breakfast and dinner is not included in the course fee, however, tea, coffee and sugar is supplied on the yachts. We provide a nutritional menu plan (including a shopping list) for breakfast, lunches not included and dinner typically used when on the sea. We encourage students to cook on the yacht as part of the yachting experience & this helps with budgeting.

ARRIVAL ARRANGEMENTS
If the need be, we can assist you in making arrangements to meet your transport and alternative accommodation needs.
We make use of a registered shuttle service between Cape Town and Langebaan.
EVENING BEFORE COURSE STARTS (only by prior arrangement)
We can meet you the day before your course starts between 17:00 and 18:00 at our office. Please make arrangements
with our office prior to your arrival.
THE MORNING THE COURSE STARTS
Please meet us at the Atlantic Yachting Office at the Club Mykonos Marina, Agora Square at 08:30. After the first day
theory courses will commence at 08:30am and finish by 17:00.
